Captive Care
Captive Husbandry and Care of the Green Tree Python

by Alan W. Zulich Text of manuscript originally published in Reptile & Amphibian Magazine. Introduction The green tree python, Morelia viridis, is a small, slender species of python, seldom exceeding six feet in length. This species is almost totally arboreal, preferring to coil over a tree branch than rest on the ground. Virtually all activities, from food and water acquisition through breeding and probably egg incubation are accomplished in the treetops.

Care & Breeding Green Tree Pythons by Dr. W Murdoch

INTRODUCTION In 1983, I bought a pair of baby green tree pythons (from the first clutch produced at the Harford Reptile Breeding Center). They bred successfully in 1986, initiating my full-fledged CHONDROMANIA. Since then, I have compiled a collection of 22 spectacularly colored animals, with a passion for specimens with highly contrasting blue patterns (my "NATURES' MARVELS"). Adult coloration is highly variable, and quite different from the babies who can hatch fluorescent yellow, brick red, or chocolate brown all in the same clutch.

Due to the high air humidity my enclosures for Morelia vididis are made of glass. The sice of the enclosure for my three Aru ladies is 140 cm (length) – 60 cm (width) – 100 cm (heigth). The heating depends on ELKSTEIN’ emitters. We do not use a ground heating because the enclosure of the Morelia viridis stand on the other enclosures. The temperature is regulated over a thermostat (Thermo Timer) – within the day 30° Celsius and in the night its 23° Celsius.
