Cave-dwelling Rat snake (Elaphe taeniura ridlei)

By Lower Ground Reptiles The Cave-dwelling Rat snake, Elaphe taeniura ridlei, also called the "Cave Racer", is a member of the Beauty or "Stripe-tailed rat" snake family. Found throughout Thailand and Malaysia, this snake is usually found inhabiting limestone caves.

This cave fauna ranges from tiny microscopic organisms right through to elephants. However not all these creatures are troglobites (cave dwellers). Some are troglophiles (animals which are found in the caves but can also live outside), and others are trogloxenes (cave dwellers which go outside to feed). Cave visitors include people and elephants.

Determining the Subspecies of the Asian Beauty Snakes

As the largest species of ratsnake, and with a variety of attractive patterns and colors, the Asian beauty snakes (Elaphe taeniura) are rapidly becoming a popular snake in the pet trade. They are easily kept, and most people don't find them difficult to breed.
